Hawrangs or Flowering knights, were an elite group of male youth in Silla Dynasty , an ancient Korean kingdom that lasted until 10th century . Hawrangs are young commandos of Silla dynasty of Korea, who were true patriots of country, always ready to sacrifice life for the sake of country. So are the students of Hawrang Academy are given training to become patriotic warrior for our Country Bharath.
The Crest of the Academy has Yin & Yang i.e. the ultimate life force mentioned in Zen philosophy, which is surrounded by blooming lotus which wholly guarded by two armed warriors called Hawrangs who are guarding the sanctity of academy/ humanity at large. The logo signifies that the Hawrangs are trained on the philosophy of Yin and Yang and focused on the growth of little commandos like a blooming Flowers. - Dr. Ashok Kumar Lenka represents an extraordinary life of service in which personal achievement has consistently remained secondary to the welfare of others, institutional excellence and nation-building. His journey—from a village in Odisha to the Indian Air Force, from a young martial arts instructor to a national sports leader, and from an Air Warrior to a mentor of thousands—is defined by one unwavering principle: to use every opportunity, every skill and every moment of his life in the service of others and the nation.
- His spirit of sacrifice, courage and service was visible from childhood. In 1981, while studying in Class VII at R.C.B.L. School, he risked his own life to save his schoolmate, Sushil Kumar Puria, from a flooded river. On another occasion, when a rabid dog had bitten several people and created fear throughout his village and surrounding areas, young Ashok Kumar Lenka displayed exceptional courage in confronting the danger and helping protect the people of Tentuligadia and neighbouring villages. These were not isolated acts of bravery but early manifestations of a life that would be dedicated to protecting, empowering and serving others.
- After joining the Indian Air Force on 10 July 1987, he transformed even his non-working hours into opportunities for self-improvement and service. From the very beginning of his career, he used his free time at the Electronics and Instrument Training Institute, Bengaluru, to acquire additional knowledge and skills. During working hours, he dedicated himself completely to the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Indian Air Force. During non-working hours, he began a parallel mission of nation-building through martial arts, athletics, adventure activities, physical fitness and Taekwondo.
- From his first posting onwards, he voluntarily trained Air Warriors, their families and civilians connected with Air Force stations, largely without charging any fee. Over the years, more than three lakh individuals have benefited from self-defence and related training initiatives associated with his service. This contribution was particularly significant because many Air Force stations are located in remote areas where access to quality sports, fitness and martial arts training is limited. Through the Air Force Family Welfare Association (AFFWA), his voluntary efforts created a lasting social and developmental impact across Air Force communities. What began as an individual effort gradually evolved into a sustained welfare movement benefiting Air Warriors, their families and civilians.
- His contribution also directly entered the mainstream of operational and combat preparedness of the Indian Air Force. He trained Quick Reaction Teams at Air Force Station Awantipur, Officer Cadets at Air Force Technical College, Garud Commandos at Air Force Station Bhuj, Agniveers at Avadi, Police Trainees and Air Warriors in unarmed combat, self-defence and physical conditioning. His work demonstrated how sports and martial arts could become instruments of operational readiness, confidence, discipline, resilience and national security.
- His technical contribution to the Indian Air Force was equally significant. At Training Centre 2, GWTI, he distinguished himself as an outstanding loader of the SAM-III system. At Air Force Technical College, Bengaluru, he contributed to the creation of nearly 100 video-based Computer-Based Training modules, which enabled easier, more accessible and effective training within the Indian Air Force. Similar training resources were developed and utilised at 37 Squadron and 18 TETTRA, thereby contributing to the modernisation and simplification of technical training.
- One of his most important operational innovations was his proposal for video-based debriefing of MiG-21 take-offs and landings at 37 Squadron, Air Force Station Nal. This initiative significantly improved the ability to analyse flight operations, identify procedural lessons and strengthen operational learning. It contributed to improved safety awareness and played an important role in reducing landing accident rates involving the MiG-21.
- During the Presidential Standard Presentation Parade of 48 Squadron and 37 Squadron at Bhuj, he displayed an exceptional combination of technical ability, creativity, leadership and organisational commitment. Working with his Commanding Officer, Wing Commander P. Mohan, he contributed to the design and preparation of the parade ground, historical documentation, digitisation of rare MiG-21 photographs from the museum and preparation of material for the President’s exhibition. He led and contributed to the President’s bouquet, media and video-photography team, live coverage, press briefing, First Day Cover, coffee-table book, brochures, pamphlets, correspondence and numerous design and communication requirements. His contribution extended far beyond his formal duties and helped create a lasting historical record of the Indian Air Force’s heritage.
- Even after retirement from the Indian Air Force, his service to the nation did not end. For the last 17 years, he has continued his voluntary welfare work at Air Force Station Avadi through AFFWA. Through Taekwondo and sports, he has contributed to the development of nearly 10,000 medal-winning performances at district, State, national and international levels. His work has also produced a large number of Black Belt practitioners and empowered generations of young people through discipline, fitness and sport.
- His most significant contribution is reflected in the athletes he has created. His students have represented India at World and Asian Championships. K. Lokapradip has represented India and achieved success at the Asian level, while Miss Saksham Yadav and Master Tejas Yadav have achieved distinction at the World Championship level. He has served as a childhood mentor and coach to athletes, guiding them from their formative years through the stages of training, discipline, Black Belt development and international competition. He and his students, including Lokapradip and Miss Harshini, have also received significant cash awards from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu for their sporting achievements.
- His own sporting achievement is remarkable. Representing India, he secured 5th position at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship. However, the greater significance of his achievement lies not in the medal or ranking itself but in the manner in which he has transformed his personal expertise into a system of mentorship that has produced international athletes and empowered thousands of young people.
- As Honorary National Secretary of Veterans India Sports Wing, he has continued his nation-building mission on a national scale. He drafted a transparent and corruption-free sports constitution designed to create a disciplined framework for sports promotion under the vision “Rashtra Bhakti, Khel Se Shakti.” This constitutional structure has been implemented across 27 States and encompasses 22 sporting disciplines, bringing together elite sportspersons, veterans and national leaders. The initiative has been supported by distinguished personalities, including national awardees such as Shri Ashok Dhyan Chand and Shri Dilip Tirkey.
- The effectiveness of this vision was demonstrated through the Global Patriotic Run organised on Republic Day in 2021, when people ran with the National Flag across all districts of India and in 52 countries worldwide. The initiative transformed sport into a powerful vehicle for patriotism, national unity and global participation and earned recognition in the India Book of Records. The initiative received video messages and support from several of India's leading sporting personalities, including Sachin Tendulkar, Abhinav Bindra, Manoj Kumar, Anju Bobby George and Dilip Tirkey, demonstrating its national significance and reach.
- For his leadership in sports and nation-building, he has received the Pride of Nation Award on two occasions—first from Major General G.D. Bakshi during Vijay Diwas celebrations in 2019 and subsequently from the Hon’ble Minister of State for Defence, Shri Sanjay Seth, on 16 December 2025.
- His contribution to adventure and national consciousness is equally distinctive. He has been nominated by the Indian Air Force for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award for climbing 11 Himalayan mountain peaks and integrating adventure, martial arts and the values of Buddhist teachings into a philosophy of discipline, courage and service. His achievements and life journey have been recorded in Wings Beyond the Sky, authored by Sergeant T.B. Rao. His forthcoming books, The Mountain Warrior and The Mountain Way: Use of Natural Resistance to Olympic Performance, will further document his philosophy of courage, discipline, natural training and human potential.
- Dr. Ashok Kumar Lenka is therefore not merely a successful sportsperson, coach, martial artist, Air Warrior, mountaineer or administrator. His true distinction lies in the manner in which he has continuously transformed personal knowledge into public service. From saving lives as a child, serving the Indian Air Force with distinction, strengthening operational training, empowering Air Force families, creating athletes, training combat personnel, promoting transparent sports governance, spreading patriotism through mass participation and inspiring youth through adventure, his life demonstrates a rare continuity of sacrifice, service and nation-building.
